About Belize

One of the Last Unspoiled Fishing Holes Left in the World

A Destination Like No Other

Belize, formerly British Honduras is a Commonwealth country situated in Central America, south of Mexico with the beautiful Caribbean Sea as its eastern shore. A British Colony since 1861, Belize achieved independence on September 21, 1981. It is the only country in Central America that has English as the official language. The country is just less than 9,000 square miles with a population of just over 180,000. Boasting the second longest barrier reef in the world and the great blue hole, it has long been a legendary destination for fishing and diving.

It is believed that Belize was the heart of the Mayan Civilization during the classical period and today has many fine examples of Mayan archaeological sites still being discovered, excavated, and restored. The natural wonders, including the flora and fauna, the rivers and caves make this a great destination for the eco-tourist. Belize is believed to be one of the last unspoiled fishing holes left in the world. Belize is also a center for international banking markets. The exchange based on the American dollar, $2 Belize = $1 US. Other interesting facts ~ Teenagers beware… the only fast food chain in the country is a Subway, and only recently have they opened a bowling alley and a two screen movie theater in Belize City!
